Lake Don Pedro, CA
By: Tim Paes
Warm weather and tough
fishing conditions marked the annual Nor-Cal Mix Team tournament at Don
Pedro. Twenty-eight teams signed up to fish this fun filled event that
included a BBQ lunch and raffle that would follow the tournament. The
tournament is designed to be a family oriented event that teams male and
female partners for a day of competition. The fishing was tough, but the
food, catered by Arnolds BBQ, and the raffle more then made up for the
tough day on the water.
Tackling the tough
conditions was the Waterford, CA team of Steve and Kathy Tosh. The
husband and wife team brought in a 6 fish limit weighing 14.30 lbs.
Tosh, who is sponsored by: Mercury, Basscat, Thermo Batteries, Sumo
Frogs, Okuma, Yamamoto, Russian Custom Rods, Escalon Bait & Tackle
and Andre Moore Custom Baits, reported that they spent much of their
day chasing schooling fish that were feeding on baitfish. They would
cast Zara Spooks at the boils of bass chasing shad. Many of their fish
were caught from the surface in water that was 100 – 150 feet deep.
They fished from Flemming to Woods and Moccasin and all the way back.
The also caught fish on boulder piles with spooks and by dropshotting
4” custom Japanese baits. For their awesome day on the water the
Tosh’s took home $830.
Second
place went to the husband and wife team of Albert and Eva Azevedo, of
Turlock, CA. The Azevedo’s brought in a 6 fish limit that weighed
11.92 lbs. Azevedo, who is sponsored by United Rentals and Azevedo
Concrete, told the crowd that they caught their fish on brown jigs
with Yamamoto trailers and brown worms that were tossed on dartheads.
They keyed on rock structure in water 20-25 feet deep in the Flemming
Meadows area. The team earned $548.
The Modesto, CA team of
Don and Jutta Mutchler finished 3rd with their 11.32 lb 6
fish limit. The husband and wife team fished island tops in the Rogers
Creek area. Their fish came out of 17-35 feet of water and were caught
on 7” green pumpkin Zoom U Tails. The Mutchler’s took home $332 for
their effort.
Rounding out the money
winners in 4th place was the husband and wife team of Richard
and Darlene Martin. The Martins brought in a 6 fish limit that weighed
8.18 lbs, earning the Los Banos, CA couple $150. Fifth place went to the
husband and wife team of Hector and Audra Monares, of Turlock, CA. The
team earned $100 for the 8.10 lb 6 fish limit. Big Fish and $260 went to
Troy and Betty Wells, of Ceres, CA. Wells, who is sponsored by: Auto
Life Sporting Goods, Stren and Super Pork, caught the 3.64 lb. Big
fish on a Pointer ripbait in Big Creek.
