BUCKHOLZ & BERG
TAKE NOR-CAL NIGHT
OPEN AT DON PEDRO
Sunday, June 2, 2002
Lake Don Pedro, CA
By: Tim Paes
Fifty-two
boats signed up to fish the Nor-Cal Bass annual night open at Lake Don
Pedro. After a week of steadily warming weather that touched the 100’s
by weeks end, the anglers were glad to see a slight break for the
weekend. The temp dropped enough to force many of the anglers to put on
their cold weather suits during the night. However, the weather did
change enough to turn off the bass as several solid limits were brought
to the scales. Thirty of the 52 teams weighed in fish with the anglers
bringing 171 bass to the scales that weighed 438 lbs which equaled a 2
½ lb average.
First
place went to Aaron Buckholz, of Linden, CA and Jeff Berg, of Stockton,
CA, with their 6 fish limit that tipped the scales at an awesome 26.92
lbs. The pair fished tapering rock points in Woods Creek in water 5 to
10 feet deep. All their fish came on black and blue jigs, Brushhogs and
10” worms in black and junebug. Buckholz and Berg took home $1,820
with their victory.
Gene
and Jeff Moss, of Modesto, CA finished 2nd with their 22.30
lb 6 fish limit. The team fished the area of the lake from the flume to
the highway 120 bridge. They caught their fish on 12” black Power
Worms in 5 feet of water on steep banks covered with rock and brush. For
their great finish the team earned $1,112.
Third
place went to Mel Williams and Chuck Seaton, of Oakdale, CA. Williams
and Seaton brought in 6 fish weighing 19.94 lbs. The anglers caught
their fish with Texas rigged Zoom Trick Worms in watermelon/red flake
and Aaron’s Magic Roboworms that were splitshot. All their fish were
caught before 10:00 p.m. and after 4:00 a.m. The pair fished slopping
banks with rock in Upper Bay and their fish came from the bank to 20
feet deep. The team also took big fish for the event, an 8.10 lb lunker
that earned the team an additional $300. For their solid
finish, Williams and Seaton took home $1,148.
Rounding
out the top 5 in 4th place was the team of Jimmy Ghiorsu, of
Discovery Bay, CA and Albert Ignacio, of Saratoga, CA. Ghiorsu and
Ignacio weighed in an 19.04 lb 6 fish limit that earned the team $325.
Fifth place went to Don Longton, of Atwater, CA and Tom Longton, of Lake
Tahoe, CA with their 6 fish limit that tipped the scales at 18.54 lbs.
The team earned $250. Second Big Fish for the tournament went to Garland
Courtroul, of Modesto, CA and Mario Azevedo, of Ceres, CA with their
8.00 lb toad that earned the team $200.
