La
Grange, CA
By: Tim Paes
Seventy-eight
anglers made their way to Don Pedro this past weekend to fish for the
more then $7,500 in prize money that would be awarded at the end of the
day. The fishing had been spotty with many anglers reporting catching
solid limits while others complained about how tough it was too catch a
limit. The key to Don Pedro was finding areas of the lake that held
bait. The bass were scattered with the top teams reporting catching fish
from 10 to 50 feet. The anglers brought 182 bass to the scales weighing
324 lbs. The huge Pedro toads were also hard to find during the
tournament as a 4.70 pounder took big fish honors for the event.
Modesto,
Ca Pro Ron Schultz has been on a streak this year with a 3rd
place finish at McClure and the Championship at Don Pedro. However, his
streak was no stronger then his partner for the day, Curt Grissom, of La
Grand, CA. Grissom took 2nd place at McClure in addition to
the title at Pedro. Schultz and Grissom brought a 6 fish limit to the
scales weighing 14.30 lbs. The pair fished rocky breaks on main lake
points in 15 to 40 feet of water. Schultz, who is sponsored by Super
Pork and Thermo Batteries, reported that their fish came on crawdad and
trout colored Keeper worms that were fished dropshot and splitshot style
on 8 lb P-Line spooled to Shimano reels, Loomis and St Croix rods.
Schultz took home $1,795 while Grissom earned $1,065 for a team total of
$2,860.
Second
place went to Pro Dan Perkins, of Arnold, CA and partner Marvin Vaughn,
of Delhi, CA. Perkins and Vaughn brought in a 13.96 lb 6 fish limit.
Perkins, who is sponsored by Ranger Boats, Mercury Marine, California
Custom Marine, Outboard Technology and V&V Baits, reported that the
pair caught their fish on one stretch of bank in the river. Perkins
found the area in prefish and it was the only spot he could consistently
catch fish. That spot was only about 100 feet long and was a rocky break
between two points. All their fish were 40 feet deep and came on brown
V&V jigs tied to 12 lb Vanish line on Diawa reels and Loomis rods.
Perkins took home $996 and Vaughn earned $599 for a team total of
$1,595.
Ballico,
CA Pro Tom Tiwater and his partner, David McEwen, of Fresno, CA,
finished 3rd with a 6 fish limit weighing 13.12 lbs. The pair
caught their fish by dropshotting and splitshotting several varieties of
worms on 10 lb P-Line with Shimano reels and Loomis rods. Tiwater
reported fishing rocky points in 20 to 50 feet of water in Moccasin.
Tiwater thanked his wife Shirley for all her support as well as his
sponsors; Thermo Batteries, Super Pork and Auto Life Sporting Goods as
he accepted $669 for his finish. McEwen also had big fish for the am
division and the tournament with his 4.70 lb bass that netted him a
total of $871. Their combined earnings came to $1,540.
Fourth
place went to Pro Angel Valdez, of Livermore, CA and Craig Handy, of
Hilmar, CA. Valdez and Handy weighed in a 12.70 lb 6 fish limit that
netted the anglers a team total of $563. Escalon, CA Pro Alvin Borba
finished 5th and took big fish in the Pro Division with his
4.20 lb bass that netted him and his partner, Brad Mikkelson, of
Turlock, CA, a team total of $741.
Finishing
just out of the money, but winners nonetheless was Atwater, CA Pro John
Myers and his partner, Hilmar, CA angler, George Azevedo. Myers and
Azevedo were the lucky anglers that took home the Avid and Premier rods
from our official rod sponsor, St Croix. The anglers finished 10th
with a 6 fish limit weighing 10.70 lbs. The lucky anglers will be
fishing the next event with their light, sensitive, quality made rods.
Thank you St Croix for contributing to the success of this organization.
After
two events and two great finishes for Pro Ron Schultz, he made his move
into 1st place in the Angler of the Year point’s race.
Schultz holds a 9-point lead over Denair, CA Pro Rudy Linn. With a 1st
and 2nd place finish under his belt, Curt Grissom holds 1st
place in the Am Division by 4 points over David McEwen. With the
addition of a throw out, this season will prove to be exciting right
down to the last event!
