This
season has been a scheduling nightmare for Nor-Cal Bass. It seemed like
the schedule had to be juggled and changed for nearly
every tournament, the mix team was no different. Obviously the change in
the schedule and unknowingly moving the tournament to graduation weekend
created a direct impact on the turnout. Although we only had 13 teams
sign-up to fish the tournament, they came prepared to have a good time.
The
Nor-Cal Mix is a team event that puts a male and female in each boat for a
fun filled day on the lake. This year’s event at Don Pedro would be no
different even though the turnout was light. The day’s festivities
include the tournament, BBQ lunch and a raffle for all to enjoy.
The
event exposes family and friends to the sport that we love. Many of which
have never competed in a tournament, but enjoy the half-day event as well
as the competition that goes along with it.
The
tournament was scheduled for a 1:00 pm weigh-in, which didn’t hinder the
team’s ability to bring in several nice 5 fish limits of fish. The
contestants brought 52 bass to the scales
weighing
123 pounds. Four of the teams brought in fish over 5 pounds with the
largest going 7.66 pounds.
Fishing
in their first tournament ever was the Oroville team of John and Angie
Kuhn. The Kuhn’s walked away with the title after weighing in a 15.84
pound 5 fish limit. Their limit was capped with the events big fish that
weighed 7.66 pounds. Not only was this their first tournament, but also
their first time on the lake. The team thanked friend Steve Tosh for
helping them with areas to fish and techniques to use. With the lake
rising at a rapid level, they
keyed on grassy banks on the main body. Their fish came on Zara Spook’s
and Yamamoto Senko’s fished right on the bank. The Kuhn’s thanked Mack
Taylor Custom Rods and Yamamoto Custom Baits as they accepted $830 in
winnings.
Second
place went to Gary and Peggy Thomas, of Tracy. They weighed in a 15.06
pound 5 fish limit. The team also keyed on the grass banks in the main
lake, fishing from the bank to 22 feet deep. They caught fish on
Splash-its, spinnerbaits,
brushogs and Keeper Custom Worms. The Thomas’ took home $495 for their
finish.
Steve
and Kathy Tosh, of Waterford took the 3rd place spot with a 5
fish limit that tipped the scales at 13.74 pounds. Again grass was the key
to their success also. The pair caught fish early on Zara Spooks then
switched to dropshotting with Yamamoto Cut Tail worms. Their kicker fish
came on a swimbait. All of their fish were caught in 3 to 10 feet of
water. The team thanked their sponsors Basscat Boats, Mercury Outboards,
MotorGuide, Yamamoto Custom Baits and Thermo-Oil Batteries as they
accepted their earnings of $395.
Special
thanks goes to our tournament trail sponsors, Stratos Boats and Evinrude
Outboards. Because of their support, Nor-Cal & 100% Bass will be
awarding a fully rigged Stratos/Evinrude prize package at their pro-am
championship tournament. Don’t miss your opportunity to feel the ride
and power of this boat and motor combination!
